Summer in beautiful Alentejo, Portugal
My mom was born in Alentejo and I have been going there to spend holidays ever since I was a baby.
Alentejo is the area of Portugal north to Algarve. I’m sure many of you have heard of or been in Algarve, but maybe not all of you been or heard of Alentejo. It is known for its hot summer days and golden fields, also by the calm and friendly people.
First I used to go there with my parents to visit my grandparents, then after my grandparents passed away I kept going with my parents quite a lot so that we would stay connected to that beautiful and calm place.
During my 20’s a took a lot of advantage of having a house in Alentejo, more specifically in Reguengos de Monsaraz. I would go there with my boyfriend (who is now my husband) to spend weekends, or with friends during the summer or for new years eve.
So as you can imagine I have spent some really great moments there and I have beautiful memories. Reguengos de Monsaraz was always a place where I felt relaxed and happy, but unfortunately ever since I moved to the UK, I hadn’t been able to go there.
My home in Portugal is Almada, just on the other side of the river from Lisbon, so every time I go to Portugal I end up spending all my time there, visiting family and friends. So you can imagine that after more than 3 years I was dying to visit Alentejo again. Also, I had seen in the news that there are two new river beaches very close to our house there, and I really love the river beaches so I really wanted to go.
So we spoke with both of our families and they all agreed to spend 4 days in Alentejo with us and there we went!
The river beaches were both amazing, although I quite liked Mourão beach better than Monsaraz Beach, only because it was bigger and had a cooler vibe.
These beaches are just how I like it, warm water and no scary waves! Both of them had an area you could swim to and jump from (although I didn’t do it!), had lifeguards, picnic and barbecue area, and public toilets. What else could you want to spend your hot summer days??
We also took the opportunity to fly the drone and get some really cool footage of the beaches from the sky (watch the video at the end of the post). It is really cool to see because these beaches are the result of the construction of a water dam, so the water made beautiful shapes around the hills.
If you are ever not in the mood for the beach or just prefer the pool, you can also enjoy Reguengo’s Lido. I love it there, the pools are clean, huge, not too busy and are great to get a good tan! I don’t know why but one day in the Lido gives me the same tan results as one week at the beach!
Also, there is always music playing, which is fun, the food from the bar is also very good! Oh, and it’s only 2,90 € admission for the whole day…bargain!
Another amazing thing about Alentejo is the food! Maybe it’s because I grew up eating food from Alentejo, but in my opinion, is the best kind of Portuguese food!
If you ever go to Alentejo, make sure to try the “Migas” and “Açorda de Bacalhau”, they are my favourite and very typical. But I won’t tell you what they are, I will let you find out 🙂
Here is a list of restaurants I recommend in Reguengos de Monsaraz and the close by villages:
A place where I always have to go when I’m in Reguengos de Monsaraz is Monsaraz.
So, Monsaraz is the Castle, and back in the day Reguengos was just a village part of Monsaraz, and that is why it’s called “Reguengos of Monsaraz”.
Monsaraz is beautiful during the day (you will also find footage of Monsaraz in the video at the end), but I love it even more during the night. The Castle is on the top of a mountain and walls are all illuminated and suddenly it seems like the castle walls are orange gold.
Inside the walls of Monsaraz, you will find a small and old but beautiful village, a Bullring, and a lot of cute little stores and amazing restaurants.
Now let’s talk about fun but scary stuff…Reguengos de Monsaraz is very close to Évora, so Sérgio’s sister had the idea to take the opportunity and sign her and Sergio up for skydiving!
They wanted me to go but I hate heights and the idea of jumping out of a plane it’s just a nightmare for me!
A friend of ours also decided to join them and so we all went on a Sunday morning to the Skydiving school of Évora…let me just say that even though I wasn’t going to do it myself, I was so scared for them!!
But everything turned out fine and they all enjoyed the experience 🙂
I hope this post made you curious about Alentejo and that you will be visiting Reguengos de Monsaraz very very soon!
