Why do we travel? What are we seeking?
As you all know I have a passion for travelling, it is my favourite thing to do in the world! And so many people share this passion, this love for exploring new places. So, it got me thinking…what is it about it that we love so much? Why do we travel? Are we seeking for something?
We often read about different travel experiences that others have shared, tips and tricks, guides, etc. But I wanted to explore more of the feeling behind it and the inner experience we have when we travel.
After some thinking, I’ve come up with a list of reasons why I think we love travelling so much.
Travel to escape
For most of us, our days look exactly the same…we wake up, get ready, go to work, work for about 7 to 10 hours, come back home, eat dinner, watch tv and go to sleep. Only to do the exact same thing the next day.
Of course, there are some variations, but in general, we tend to create routines and live in auto-pilot.
Now, don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with this lifestyle especially if you enjoy it, but we all need to come out of auto-pilot every now and then, break the routine and escape somewhere where we can recharge and experience something new.
When we do the same things every day we get drained and we start craving some change and adventure.
And whether you are escaping a demanding job, a heart-breaking breakup or the loss of a loved one, travelling can provide relief to stress and unhappiness.
Travel to learn
Travelling is a learning experience. When we travel our minds are more alert and open to things.
So, we learn new things, new words of a new language, new facts about a certain place and its history, new foods, new ways of doing things, new ways of behaving, and we even learn more about ourselves.
We travel to absorb, to grow and evolve. Seeing the world is more educational than school or even university. By experiencing something unfamiliar we learn new skills and acquire new knowledge.
And the learning you gain from travelling will stay with you, unlike the math you learn in high school and is long gone because you never had to use it again…haha
The reason why these learnings stay with us is that they are significant to our lives, to the way we engage with others and the things around us.
Travel to experience
When we travel to new places, we get to experience new things that the world has to offer.
There is so much more to see and experience beyond our comfort zones and what we already know.
Travelling is the best way to try new things and do something exciting that you can’t do at home. Depending on where you were born you might have never seen snow, or the ocean, seen a kangaroo or been close to a volcano.
If you stay in the same place all your life you might never get to swim with the dolphins, see the 7 wonders of the world or ride a quad in the desert.
By travelling, you get to experience things that are not as common where you live and discover new ways of doing things.
Travel to straighten relationships and creating new ones
Whether you are travelling with friends, family or partner, travelling tends to bring people together.
I’ve had the experience of travelling with friends and coming back even closer! The reason for this is because sharing experiences and memories straightens relationships, especially when they are good ones 🙂
Those beautiful memories that you create when travelling with someone will bond you forever!
Also, a lot of people, especially when travelling alone, see it as a way to meet new people and make new friends, either fellow travellers or locals. Once you’ve bonded with someone new, this can be a valuable travel benefit and open new possibilities for the future, like travelling to visit them or with them.
Personally, I am a bit shy and don’t tend to make new friends when I travel…but even I had a few experiences with people approaching me and spending a few hours with them and then coming back home with the cool memory of the moments we’ve shared.
Travel to expand the mind
By travelling, we broaden our perspective, we see that there isn’t one way of living.
There is no way to really understand how different life in another place really is unless you see it for yourself.
When you are in direct contact with different ways of going about life, you begin to reflect on your own way of going about life. You can then choose what you want to incorporate in your own life, question the things you’ve always believed were one way only and adjust yourself.
You begin to develop a new awareness and a wider perspective and world view.
Travel to experience ourselves
For me, this is the true reason as it encompasses, in a way, all the other ones.
In truth, the only thing we crave is to experience ourselves, in different settings and new situations, to expand our awareness of who we truly are and what we are capable of.
Travelling expands our conciseness by challenging us and pushing us out of our comfort zones.
You will discover how you react to different things and how resourceful you are.
Also, travelling gives your mind space to wander, to reflect and come up with a fresh new perspective on how to live life.
Travel can also be seen as a catalyst for change within ourselves. As we see more of the world and get to know more about others, our empathy, understanding and tolerance increases. And as we become more in love with the world, we love ourselves and others more.
I really hope you all enjoyed this post and it motivates you to travel more!
