How to live your best life – regardless of your circumstances
My goal as always been to live the best life I can possibly live, and for the longest time, I had a very specific idea of what that meant to me: to travel, to have a well-paid job and have a good life/work balance, to have a pretty house, an active social life, stuff like that…
But as I achieved most of those things I realised I still felt restless, unsatisfied and still not feeling like I was living my best life.
After giving it some thought, I concluded that “living your best life” is not about the things you have or the goals you achieve, not even close! And in fact, everyone has access to their best life right now regardless of their circumstances.
So, I sat down with the intention of writing a list of what makes for the “best life” we can possibly live and this is what I came up with:
Yes, be yourself! And this is possibly the simplest but most difficult thing to do on this list. Being our true selves should be the easiest thing in the world if it wasn’t for the fact that we care too much about what other people think.
Most of us have been conditioned and pressure our whole lives to conform to what our family, friends and society expects of us. We learn to suppress our emotions, our desires and needs to be accepted and to be seen as well behaved, strong or just “normal”. We also learned to judge others for being “different” or “weird”, and therefore we know that others wouldn’t think twice to judge us if we were to be different or weird too.
The truth is, you could have all the material things in the world, be surrounded by people who admire you, and still be unhappy if this is all based on a persona you created to be accepted and not the real you.
To live your best life means to live your life in authenticity. And only by being the most authentic expression of yourself will you be able to enjoy life to the fullest.
Other people’s opinions are overrated, and let me tell you a secret: what other people think of you has nothing to do with you, but everything to do with themselves. So, be yourself regardless!
Also, it is impossible to be liked by everyone, it doesn’t matter who you choose to be there will always be people who won’t like you, so choose to be yourself and make a point to surround yourself by the people that like you for who you really are.
Practice self-care and self-love
To me, self-care has 3 major pillars: Physical Health, Mental Health and Emotional Health.
Body and mind are intrinsically connected, you simply cannot have a healthy body if you don’t have a healthy mind or have a healthy mind if you don’t have a healthy body.
If you want to live your best life, you need to care for your mind, body and soul. Because if you are experiencing any illness, pain, anxiety, depression, emotional imbalances or any other negative conditions, you won’t be able to fully enjoy all the other blessings that are right in front of you.
So, nourish your soul, eat whole nutritious foods, move your body, meditate, get some rest, go out into nature and love yourself.

But the bottom line is: it doesn’t matter who you are, where you are, what you have, or who you have if you don’t have yourself.
Do more of the things you love
Before you tell me that you don’t have the time to do the things you love because you have to do the things you have to do…I’ll touch on that topic as well, so keep an open mind 🙂
Doing more of the things you love goes hand in hand with being your true self, and if you spend 100% of your time doing something else then you’re not living in your authenticity.
So, before you say that there are too many things you “HAVE” to do and no time to do any of the things you wish to be doing instead, ask yourself: why are you doing those things in the first place?
Apart from maybe the job that requires you to spend a minimum of 8 hours a day there, what else are you committing yourself to that doesn’t really serve you, and who are you doing it for?
Take a good look at how you are spending your days and what things aren’t serving you anymore and are instead sucking all of your energy out? And then replace those things with other activities that you actually love, that fill you up instead of draining you out.
You don’t need to be productive all the time and some activities don’t need to have a purpose apart from making you happy! So, make a list of the things that bring you joy, clean up your schedule and invest time in your happiness.
Love more the things you do
So, let’s address the things you HAVE to do even though but you might not like…. even if I think “having” to do something is relative…but anyway!
Not everyone has a job they like, or enjoys cleaning the house, or wasting 3 hours a day commuting to work, etc… these are just some examples I thought of now.
But if you want to make your days a little happier start injecting more love into those things you have to do and be creative on how to make them more enjoyable.
Hate cleaning the house? Put on some music and dance to it as your cleaning. Hate commuting? Listen to an interesting Podcast. Don’t like your job? Focus on little things about it that you enjoy – it might be a co-worker that you get along with or even just the salary you receive every month that allows you to do other things, etc… Focus on the good things and be creative in ways you can make your daily activities more enjoyable – even if it’s just a tiny bit.
If you do this you will end up seeing a dramatic change on your overall well-being and levels of happiness.
Be in the present moment
There is only one time when you can be living your best life, and that is right now.
Most of us work so hard in order to have a better future we forget to live the present, and we keep postponing our happiness for “when we have this” or “achieve that”, only to not be satisfied when we get those things because then there’s a new goal.
This precise moment, right now, is when you can and should be happy. This is the only time you have power over and when you can make a choice to live your best life.
And it doesn’t matter what you are doing right now – whether you are at work, at home or in Bali having the best holiday of your life. You have the power to make this moment the best that it can possibly be.
And guess what? When you make this moment the best that it can be, you are making every moment from now on also the best that it can be, and therefore, begin to live your best life starting right now.
Acts of kindness – being of service
Have you ever done something kind for someone else and felt your heart fill up with warmth?
Being kind and making your purpose to of service humanity is acknowledging that life is abundant and there is plenty of everything for everyone.
A lot of people that abstain from helping others or giving to others do so due to their fear of lack. They believe that by giving to others they will not have enough for themselves.
And this is not only true for things (as into to giving actual material things to others), this applies to simple acts of kindness, understanding and even knowledge.
This selfish mentality will never bring you happiness or fulfilment because like I said, it comes from a scarcity mentality. It makes you live in fear, anxiety and negativity.
When you choose to switch to feelings of abundance you begin to live in compassion, kindness and love, and you’re not afraid to give or share.
Now, I want to make one thing very clear: do not confuse being of service and acts of kindness with living for others or putting yourself aside to satisfy others. This is about filling your own cup first until it overflows and you have enough to share.
When you love yourself first you open your heart to love others, and you know exactly the difference between choosing to be kind or being taken advantage of.
As you can see these are all things that we can do, right now, regardless of our own individual circumstance. And if you do all of these, you will soon begin to feel that you’re living your best life!
