I’ve decided to write this post because lately I’ve been encountering a lot of opinions on this, and I felt the need to come here and share my own.

Obviously, not all vegans are into spirituality, in fact, veganism itself has nothing to do with spirituality, but a lifestyle based on ethics, morality, and kindness.

But the relationship comes from the fact that a lot of people who are into spirituality eventually become vegans, and the reason is mainly based on the kindness dimension of veganism, and the feeling of oneness one experiences when on the spiritual path.

This feeling of oneness – in other words, a feeling of connectedness with everything and everyone – eventually puts you off from causing any harm or suffering to other living beings and feels you up with great respect for mother earth and all forms of life.

And for this reason, a lot of vegan “spiritual people” tend to judge others who also claim to “be spiritual” but are not vegan. Their argument is that someone who is “really spiritual” would never kill or abuse an animal for the sake of a tasty meal.

I understand where they are coming from, I really do. But I don’t actually agree with the belief that being vegan makes anyone “more spiritual” or that if someone eats meat then they are “not truly spiritual”.

I will explain the reason why a little further down in this post but before, let me share my story.

To be honest, I’m not sure what came first for me – stop eating meat or getting into spirituality. These two experiences are so intertwined for me that I genuinely struggle to pinpoint what came first.

I can, however, firmly say that both of them came from an expansion in my awareness.

There was a time when I did not look for information. At a subconscious level, there were many things I didn’t want to be aware of!

So much of what we do and believe in is pure conditioning and programming we’ve been put through all our lives, by people who have been conditioned and programmed themselves into thinking and behaving a certain way.

If you think about it, pretty much none of your beliefs are actually your own, yet they rule your whole life.

And I don’t know how or why it came about, but a shift in consciousness and awareness happened for me. I think it was the culmination of years of suffering in many ways that did it for me, which made me reach a point where I just couldn’t live the same way anymore…but even this is just a supposition.

One day I just found myself hungry for what I thought was knowledge, but in reality, it was awareness! And it’s funny how, once you open up to the truth, the truth is revealed to you effortlessly.

I barely had to look for it. As soon as the hunger for awareness came, information started to appear, my awareness began to expand, and I had a consciousness shift.

Suddenly, I couldn’t eat meat. Not just my mind but even my body was rejecting it. And almost simultaneously, I came into contact with people and situations that opened up my third eye and put me on the spiritual path.

I didn’t actually become vegan at this point, I just stopped eating meat and would eat fish and other animal products occasionally, but even that started to feel wrong pretty quickly.

So, it wasn’t that I became vegan because I was on the spiritual path, and it wasn’t the other way around either. Both things just happened in my reality almost at the same time. And I truly believe that both fueled each other simultaneously.

I choose a vegan lifestyle for all the usual reasons  – ethical, environmental, health – but also for spiritual reasons – I can feel the pain and suffering of others as if it was my own, and I rather consume karma-free food!

So, as you can see, for me these two things are very connected, and this is why I can understand where those claims come from.

But at the same time, this is my journey! It might be similar to a lot of other people’s journeys, and it also may not be similar at all.

If you are reading this and you are “into spirituality”, then you’ll know: we are all spiritual! Some people may be more “into spirituality” than others, but regardless of that, we are all spiritual beings!

And “being on the spiritual path” is only an expression for people who are aware of it but, in reality, we are all on a spiritual path.

And being spiritually aware doesn’t automatically put you into soul alignment. In fact, a lot of people who are not spiritually aware or even into spirituality at all, are more in alignment than a lot of “spiritually aware people”.

This reality is based on contrast and duality, everything has an opposite and it serves a very important purpose!

We need to be very careful with spiritual egos. In the spiritual community, we talk a lot about ego death, how the ego is at the root of so many problems, and how we have to transcend it.

But the ego never dies, it transforms. So, if anyone claims to be “more spiritual” for whatever reason, then you can be sure that they have just fallen for the tricks of the ego once again.

For me, and for a lot of people, becoming vegan might be an important catalyst or consequence of becoming spiritually aware. But it won’t be for everyone!

We are all entitled to have our opinions, views, and beliefs. But whilst some opinions, views, and beliefs might be considered “more spiritual”, what is truly spiritual is to be sovereign over your own life and allow for others to be sovereign over their own life.

Yes, you may plant seeds, yes, you may share your views, but respecting and honoring others people’s journeys and life choices is the most spiritual thing you can do.

Everyone is here to be the creator of their own reality, to follow their own path, and it’s not up to you to know what their path should be.

Trust the universe, trust the process, trust that everything is unfolding exactly as it should be. Focus on your journey and release all judgments 🙂

I really hope you guys enjoyed this post, and please feel free to share your opinions in the comments!

See you soon!
